The treatment of timber with CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) for outdoor exposure provides protection against rot, fungal decay and termite attack, but not against the effects of weathering. Timber exposed outside to the weather is subjected to repeated cycles of wetting and drying that cause the timber to swell and shrink, leading to splitting, cracking and warping.
